Journalism

Front-page coverage, from politics to LEGO nerds

I got my start in writing through journalism, which I studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Then I found out how little reporters make, and I sold out and moved to Denmark to work in marketing. ︎

I’ve written for six publications in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Denmark. Journalistic work isn’t just writing -- it’s also a lot of story research, brainstorming, interviewing, fact-checking, editing, proofreading, team coordination, and self-management. All these skills still serve me well in my daily work.

Below, you’ll find some of the best stories I wrote as a reporter.

[COVER STORY]

Inside the world of adult LEGO hobbyists

This cover story came from several months’ research, visits and interviews with a group of adult LEGO hobbyists, following them as they brought their plastic artistry to a major model railroad convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The story made the cover of Isthmus, which goes out to 80,000 readers weekly.

[INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING]

Remote controls: regulating drones in campus airspace

When the Federal Aviation Administration released their Part 107 waiver regulations in 2016, it sparked a huge legal debate about who gets to control drone flights, and where. Drone technology was outpacing the legal regulations meant to govern it.

I examined that conflict as drones flew over the grounds of a public university in Wisconsin.

Dig deeper right here.

[COMMUNITY POLITICS]

The fighter jet that (nearly) nobody wants

Madison, Wisconsin is slated to be home to the new Lockheed-Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jet. The motion meets loads of local resistance, yet the jet would keep hundreds of millions of dollars in the local economy. It’s hippies versus the Chamber of Commerce.

I wrote a two-part series covering the conflict, both of which made the front page of Isthmus.

Here’s part one of that story.

[ARTS & CULTURE]

Roskilde 2022: scenes from the tent-wrecking downpour

Each year, I coordinate Roskilde Festival coverage on behalf of the Copenhagen Post. I also write the stories, like concert reviews and this slice-of-life piece from the festival grounds.

Head to the festival here.

[AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY]

Licensed commercial drone photographer

In 2016, I earned my commercial UAV operators’ license from the Federal Aviation Administration, to support my reporting with aerial photography.

My work has been featured across three newspapers, honored in a digital arts symposium, and used in collaboration with Danish visual artists.

I’ve got plenty more work samples if you’re keen for them.
As always, just reach out and ask.
